american artist francis baker fosters the growth of sequoia, peace lily and china doll roots to grow into various shapes and forms -
using specially created molds to guide the usual material. the work explores the themes of confinement, abandonment, control and isolation,
where baker often encourages the root to take on anthropomorphic figures - entwining the concept of life and mortality through using the living substance.
the pieces begin as sculptures and are presented through the photographic medium - fluctuating between the abstract and the figurative.
