presented as part of the simple vision exhibition - coordinated by japan creative - and shown at maison et objet 2013 is peter marigold's 'dodai' bench.
the design was fabricated by respected japanese furniture company hinoki kogei through splitting a single log into two pieces.
on
top of this base - a 'hiba' japanese cypress - is covering created
from woven grass (igusa) and wooden rods this can be rolled back so as
to
use the interior space for storage. it is held in place with coloured bungees stretched over dark hardwood turned knobs.
'dodai' itself means 'base' in japanese and the benches loosely reference architectural beams laid on the foundations of houses.
